Frustrating problem with Ares connecting

Filesharing is one of my favorite things. Not only does it mean that I get great music for free, but I really enjoy pondering the socio-economic consequences of sharing what is essentially someone else’s property over the vastness of the Internet. Essentially it’s the free stuff that I like most, though.

So when I turn on my computer to find Ares not connecting properly, it really sends me wild. And this is not the first time I’ve had problems with Ares connecting: last year around December time the same thing happened for a while; again the problem occurred the year before. All very frustrating, let me tell you.

The problem of Ares not connecting is down to the way in which it handles the cnodes – the IPs that it connects to – between sessions. Ares should keep a list of last known ‘good’ IPs that it will try and connect to when you next fire up the old software. If this list of IPs is not good then we get problems with Ares connecting.

The problem seems to be limited only to older versions of Ares like Ares Galaxy, and fortunately doesn’t occur with later versions of Ares. Ares Ultimate was my, ahem, ultimate choice, but Ares Vista is a great candidate that does not suffer this problem.
